Raindrops on my Head

Updated: May 25, 2023

Early in the morning, while it was still dark outside, I woke up to the sound of rain tapping against my window. There was a sound of thunder off in the distance and every few minutes a small flicker of light would tell me somewhere a few miles away lighting had struck. It was a quiet rain shower, the type that relaxes you and makes you want to stay curled up in your warm soft covers for as long as possible.

When I got up later in the morning, I looked out the window which was covered with raindrops and the morning was beautiful. You know the crisp, calm kind of beauty that only a rain shower can create. Most mornings we wake up to see the sunrise, bright orange sometimes almost a pink hue, rising slowly from the horizon bringing life back into every living thing that’s loopy from a long night of rest. While those gorgeous sunrises always bring a smile to our faces, there’s something about waking up to a cloudy atmosphere and puddles. It puts you in a relaxed mood, where you just want to take the day easy for once. It’s like a refreshing new beauty.

The rest of the day was the same, cloudy, cool, and crisp. I took a walk trying out my new rain boots and the cats followed behind stopping ever so often to shake the water off their paws from the puddles. Since it had stopped raining for a while they took advantage to stretch their legs after having spent the morning sleeping hidden away avoiding any chance of getting wet. The younger kittens played together chasing each other up and down the deck. They seemed to be examining the new life that the plants had as if the rain had changed them in some mystical way.

Everything seemed so clean after the rain. The leaves and grass looked greener and the air had this sweet smell to it. Every time it rains it seems like someone just took everything and threw it in the washer. Life seems cleaner and new and yet it's still the same old trees and grass.

Rain isn't just good for growing things and giving things life. It also makes us feel good. It reminds us of how everything can have a fresh start, how we all have the chance to just clear everything and start over. A chance to be reborn into the world. That's how I feel every time calm rain showers drift by every now and then, it's my reminder that when things seem to get repetitive or hard, a little rain will come and wash our worries away and leave us with a new beginning. So the next time it rains, put your rain boots on and grab your umbrella and just go soak up all that new clean air.
